Every NRI owner makes this choice, usually without saying it out loud. Here's the honest comparison — including the cases where your family is the right answer and we are not.
What family does brilliantly
- They can be at the property tonight, not next Tuesday.
- They love you. Their care is real and their loyalty isn't billed monthly.
- They already know the neighbours, the plumber, the corporator.
- For a single errand — receive a courier, open a door — nobody is better.
A common refrain on NRI forums is some version of “your best bet is to ask a close friend” — and for one-off errands, that instinct is right.
Where it quietly breaks
- No documentation. Years of 'sab theek hai' produce zero evidence if a dispute ever comes.
- Accountability is awkward. You can't demand photos from your uncle, or question his contractor's bill.
- It decays. Enthusiastic in year one, occasional in year three, resentful by year five — and you'll be the last to know.
- Skill has limits. A loving eye isn't a trained one: seepage vs paint bubble, boundary drift, a meter running hot.
- The relationship pays the price. Every request is a favour, every follow-up a burden, every problem a potential quarrel.

The questions families actually ask
Isn't hiring a manager insulting to my family in India?
The opposite, usually. What wears families down isn't being trusted — it's being conscripted: terrace checks in June heat, tenant chasing, contractor supervision. Taking the labour off your parents or brother while keeping them informed tends to improve the relationship, not wound it.
My brother already watches the property. Why add anything?
Then he stays exactly where he is — the person you trust. What's missing is the record: dated, geo-tagged evidence that protects everyone, including him. If a boundary dispute or tenant claim ever surfaces, 'my brother went sometimes' is not a file your lawyer can open.
A relative is free. How do I justify paying?
Free has a cost ledger of its own: unpaid favours, undocumented spending, problems noticed late, and a relationship that absorbs every friction. Can family and a service work together?
